Following My Dreams: Thirty-One is in the House!

Did you know that one of my best friends is also a blogger?  It's been great since she moved from the PA/DE area down to Florida last year, her blog posts have helped me to get an extra glimpse into her life :)  She also loves Thirty-One, like me, and recently blogged about it.  Check it out and don't forget to leave her a comment :)

Following My Dreams: Thirty-One is in the House!: If you haven't yet been to a Thirty-One bag party, you are so missing out.  They have all the fun patterns, solids and styles you could ask...

Happy 4th of July!

Happy 4th of July everyone! I hope that you and your families have a great day planned. We're heading out to go on our camping trip today, but check-in isn't until 3, so we'll have some time in the day to relax. I picked up a little bit of decorations for our cabin at the Christmas Tree shop yesterday, but I'm hoping to see someplace that sells sparklers for the boys on our drive up to Lancaster. Have fun!

Our upcoming camping trip or rather "glamping"

I do not come from a long line of campers.  If anything, my family (myself included) can sometimes be a hotel snob.  We like to save money and get the best deal, but I remember more than one time switching hotels if it wasn't up to par.  So what has my 6 year old son been clambering to do for the past two years?  Go camping, of course.  Luckily, my brother does enjoy camping, like real camping, in a tent in the woods and everything.  So our plan was to have my son first go camping in the backyard so that he could work his way up to going camping with my brother.

But a couple of months ago, I was browsing online when I found Lake in Wood Campground.  This campground had everything that I could hope for with our family of two kids: two playgrounds, outdoor swimming pool, kiddie pool, covered swimming pool, mini golf, hay rides, fire engine rides, hiking trails, bingo, arcade, restaurant and of course a lake for fishing!

Plus it is located in Pennsylvania Dutch Country and I love the Amish :)

Yes, I know they don't like having their pictures taken, I didn't take the pic! :b

You can go to Lake In Wood Campground to go camping in a tent, use your RV or rent one of their Unique Rentals.

Unique is definitely the word, you can choose from a Caboose, a Treehouse, a Yurt, a Ship, a Covered wagon and more.  We decided to go a little less unique and chose a cabin.  This is where the "glamping" part of the camping comes in.  We're staying at the Lake View Cabin.

The Lake View Cabin was actually our second choice, but our first choice was already booked.  Therefore it's actually a little bigger than we actually need. It sleeps 2 adults and 4 children (we only have two).  But the sleeping arrangements for 2 kids includes two bunk beds, so now I won't have the hassle of dealing with my kids arguing who sleeps where.  If they both want to sleep on the top they can (not really, because my three year old would fall right off, I'm hoping they both choose to sleep on the bottom).  The cabin also includes a bathroom, refrigerator, coffeemaker, toaster, gas grill, microwave, TV and Air Conditioner.  Now that's my kind of roughing it :b Truthfully the cost is not that cheap, we could have easily gotten a hotel in the area for less, but it's a great way to introduce my family (and me!) to camping and there is so much to do that I think we're going to have a wonderful trip!

I'm a Thirty-One Consultant!

That's right, a couple of weeks ago I signed up to become a Thirty-One Consultant. I already sell Tastefully Simple, which is so yummy, but I really love the bags and totes and storage solutions from Thirty-One that I couldn't resist the 25% discount that I'll get. Plus, I think it will be a great way for me to earn some extra cash over the summer and hopefully meet some wonderful ladies.

As a social worker, I love helping my community, so my first party will be a fundraiser for Exceptional Care for Children in Newark, Delaware.  Exceptional Care for Children or ECC is Delaware's only 24-hour skilled pediatric nursing facility for transitional or long-term care.  ECC provides top-quality pediatric care in a home-like setting, so the children don't feel like they are in a hospital.  If you would like to learn more about Exceptional Care for Children, please visit www.exceptionalcare.org From this party, I will be donating my 25% profit. If you're interesting in purchasing something while making a difference, please visit: ECC's Thirty-One Fundraiser.

I will also be sharing with you some of the awesome items that I have and hopefully give you some suggestions to help organize and simplify your life. One of my most recent items is the Large Utility Tote in the Minty Chip print which I had personalized with "To Grow Into". This is to help me store the clothes that my 6 year old son has grown out of, but my 3 year old son is not yet big enough for. I was also able to purchase the new Top-a-Tote in grey for only $10 for the Month of June only. The brown Top-a-Tote would look great with the Minty Chip print as well. This is great for me because I have two cats and this will help keep the cat hairs off the clothes while my 3 year old is growing :)  I also have Thirty-One boards on Pinterest, so feel free to follow me there also :)

Monday's Grants: The Mockingbird Foundation- Deadline 8/1/2012

Monday's Grants

As we all know, women play so many roles, we're mothers, we're daughters, we're friends, we're wives, we're amazing!  One of my roles is that of a social worker.  I've been a stay at home mom for the past 5 years and I have loved it!  But during that time, I also continued my education and received my Master's in Social Work.  I really believe that I was put on this earth to make a difference in people's lives and be a change agent.  In order to provide change as a social worker, you often need funding!  I keep updated on grants and funding that is available and I thought since I'm doing the research anyway, I might as well share my found information with individuals or groups who could also use it. So I've decided to start Monday's Grants. I will post grants weekly that may be useful to nonprofits, groups, teachers, individuals and more.  Many grants will be RFP's (Request for Proposals), but I will try to include a selection of different grants. Enjoy!

The Mockingbird Foundation

Deadline: Initial Inquiries are due August 1st
Full proposals must be submitted by October 1st; only those invited will be reviewedAmount:$100 to $5,000

The Mockingbird Foundation, Inc. (“Mockingbird”) offers competitive grants to schools and nonprofit organizations that effect improvements in areas of importance to the Phish fan community. Our programmatic focus is music education for children, defined as follows:
  • Music: Mockingbird is particularly interested in projects that encourage and foster creative expression in any musical form (including composition, instrumentation, vocalization, or improvisation), but also recognizes broader and more basic needs within conventional instruction. Mockingbird encourages applications associated with diverse or unusual musical styles, genres, forms, and philosophies.
  • Education: Education may include the provision of instruments, texts, and office materials, and the support of learning space, practice space, performance space, and instructors/instruction. Mockingbird is particularly interested in projects that foster self-esteem and free expression, but does not fund music therapy which is not education nor music appreciation which does not include participation.
  • Children: Mockingbird is interested in targeting children eighteen years or younger, but will consider projects which benefit college students, teachers, instructors, or adult students. Mockingbird is particularly (though not exclusively) interested in programs which benefit disenfranchised groups, including those with low skill levels, income, or education; with disabilities or terminal illnesses; and in foster homes, shelters, hospitals, prisons, or other remote or isolated situations.

Limitations

  • Funding Amount: Grants range in size from $100 to $5,000 and are made on a one-time basis, non-renewable, and non-transferable.
  • Geographic Focus: U.S., with an interest in geographic diversity throughout the U.S. (We cannot fund organizations outside the U.S., and we have funded within 43 U.S. States – so far!)
  • Recipient Restrictions: Grants are typically made only to nonprofit organizations with tax-exempt status under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Service code, or who have a sponsoring agency with this status. Organizations selected to submit a full proposal will be required to submit documentation of their status as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt institution or as a public school. Public schools are tax-exempt and so eligible for funding, although school-based grantees cannot be independent of the school, must take place at the school, and must be supervised by the applicable municipality. Mockingbird does not normally consider grants to individuals or to fund research, fundraising organizations or events, programs that promote or engage in religious or political doctrine, or organizations outside the United States. It is hoped that nonprofit organizations who apply for support are operated and organized without discrimination in hiring staff or providing services on the basis of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, national origin or disability.
  • Special Interests: Mockingbird is particularly interested in organizations with low overhead, innovative approaches, and/or collaborative elements to their work, but these are not restrictive.

Application Process

Full proposals are by invitation only, and will not be considered if unsolicited.
  • Initial Inquiry: Those interested in submitting a proposal should first complete the online Initial Inquiry Form via our website. That form requests organizational details and allows for approximately two pages of narrative description. We prefer that a responsible officer from the applying organization fill out the form. Initial inquiries submitted via any other channel will not be considered. Submissions by postal mail will not be reviewed and cannot be returned.
  • Supplemental Materials: We are unable to review any supplemental materials accompanying either your Initial Inquiry or Full Proposal submission, such as books, videos, cassettes, etc. Please do not send any materials beyond those specifically requested by the Mockingbird Foundation.
  • Acknowledgment: After submitting your letter of inquiry through our online form, you should receive an automated response acknowledging receipt. Due to the large volume of inquiries we receive, however, we are unable to provide you with any additional updates on the status of your inquiry. You will be contacted via email ONLY if your project is selected for further consideration, at which point you will be invited to submit a full and formal proposal. Please do not contact the Foundation asking for an update on our review process.
Deadlines: Initial Inquiries may be submitted at any time, though are considered in cycles. The current cycle is as follows, and details (including deadlines) for future funding rounds will be appended here at the completion of this round:
  • Submission of initial inquiries occurs via an online form; inquiries are due August 1st.
  • The Funding Committee will review inquiries in August, inviting full proposals by early September.
  • Full proposals must be submitted by October 1st; only those invited will be reviewed
  • Full proposals will be reviewed by the Board throughout October.
  • We expect to make funding announcements between Halloween and Thanksgiving.
  • Further Information

Please remember that we are an all-volunteer organization with no paid staff, so we would appreciate if you would keep additional correspondence to a minimum. If you have a crucial question regarding the grants process, however, you should email Kristen Godard at grants@mbird.org. Questions regarding the likelihood of funding cannot (and will not) be answered by an individual, as the Foundation’s decision-making process is collaborative. To learn more about this grant, please go to Mockingbird Foundation

What to do with all those extra socks?

Look at all these socks- seriously this is how many extra socks I have after finally sitting down to sort through all of them. All of these socks do not match! Craziness! Having frugalness (hoarding?) in my blood, I couldn't bare to throw them all away. So what could I do? Why, put my kids to work dusting, of course, haha. My 6 year old lasted about 5 minutes, but my 3 year old loved it!

Sore throat? This article's for you

Last night I started getting a sore throat and then an earache. Today I am full on sick, with bodyaches and just ickiness (technical term) all over. Because my 6 year old had Strep about two weeks ago, I went to Google to diagnose myself haha. I found this article on WebMD that was helpful to me, hopefully you won't need it, but just in case, here it is:

Is Your Sore Throat a Cold, Strep Throat, or Tonsillitis?

Got a sore throat? Wonder if your painful sore throat is from a cold, strep throat, or tonsillitis? Here's help with how to tell.

What's the Difference Between a Cold, Strep Throat, and Tonsillitis?

A sore throat is often the first sign of a cold. However, a sore throat from a cold often gets better or goes away after the first day or two. Other cold symptoms such as a runny nose and congestion may follow the sore throat.

Strep throat, which is an infection due to streptococcus bacteria, is another cause of sore throats and tonsillitis. With strep throat, the sore throat is often more severe and persists.

Tonsillitis is a painful inflammation or infection of the tonsils, the tissue masses located at the back of the throat.

Is a Sore Throat With a Cold Caused by Viruses or Bacteria?

Sore throats can be caused by viruses or bacteria. The most common causes of sore throats are viruses. Viral sore throats are often accompanied by other cold symptoms that may include a runny nose, cough, red or watery eyes, and sneezing. Other causes of sore throat include smoking, pollution or irritants in the air, allergies, and dry air.

Along With a Sore Throat, What are Other Cold Symptoms?

In addition to a sore throat, other common cold symptoms include:

Runny nose
Sneezing
Cough
Mild headache
Mild body aches
Fever

How Are Sore Throats With Colds Treated?

Although there is no cure for a sore throat caused by a cold virus, there are ways to help you feel more comfortable. Drinking warm liquids, gargling with warm salt water, sucking on ice chips, or taking an over-the-counter medicine may relieve symptoms of pain or fever. When you are sick with a cold, it is also important to get enough rest, eat a healthy diet, and drink plenty of fluids.

Can Medications Relieve Symptoms of a Sore Throat With a Cold?

Over-the-counter cold medications may relieve cold and sore throat symptoms. However, the benefits of these drugs are minimal. Some cold medications include:

Pain relievers, such as acetaminophen and ibuprofen and naproxen, to relieve the aches and pains of a cold and sore throat. (Aspirin should not be given to children because of its link to Reye's syndrome, a disorder that can cause brain damage and death.)

Sore throat sprays and lozenges to soothe your throat and numb the throat pain temporarily. (Lozenges should not be given to young children)

Decongestant nasal sprays to relieve a sore throat caused by postnasal drip -- nasal drainage that runs down your throat. (Be sure to stop using nasal decongestant sprays after three days, or you may have an increase in congestion when you stop them.)
Antibiotics should not be used to treat a cold virus and sore throat. Antibiotics are effective only against bacteria. They will not work on sore throats associated with colds, which are caused by viruses.

How Is Strep Throat Different From a Sore Throat With a Cold?

Strep throat is caused by an infection of streptococcus bacteria. Strep throat spreads by having contact with an infected person's saliva or nasal secretions. Although strep throat is more common in children aged 5 to 15, it also occurs in adults. To diagnose strep throat, your doctor can check a rapid strep test or send a throat swab to the lab for a culture.

Is Strep Throat More Serious Than a Sore Throat With a Cold?

Strep throat can cause more serious illnesses, such as rheumatic fever, a disease that may harm the heart valves. That's why it's important to get proper medical treatment. With proper treatment, strep throat is usually cured within 10 days.

Are Strep Throat Symptoms Different From a Sore Throat With a Cold?
Strep throat symptoms are usually more severe than symptoms of a sore throat with a cold and may include the following:

Sudden sore throat
Loss of appetite
Painful swallowing
Red tonsils with white spots
Fever

Do I Need to See my Doctor if I Think I Have Strep Throat?

The symptoms of a cold and strep throat can be very similar. If you think you have symptoms of strep throat, visit your health care provider. Your doctor will ask you about your symptoms and do a physical exam, and you may be given a strep test.

What Is a Strep Test for a Sore Throat?

A rapid strep test checks for streptococcus bacteria infection in the throat. The test is painless and takes very little time. The tip of a cotton swab is used to wipe the back of the throat. The swab is then tested right away. If the strep test is positive, you have strep throat. If the strep test is negative, you likely do not have strep throat. However, if there are strong signs of strep throat, your health care provider can do a different throat swab test that is sent to the lab to see if strep bacteria can be grown (cultured) from it. A throat culture takes a couple of days for results.

What Is the Treatment for Strep Throat?

Strep throat is treated using antibiotics, which kill the bacteria causing the infection. Antibiotics are often taken as pills or given as a shot. Penicillin and amoxicillin are common antibiotics used to treat strep throat. Other antibiotics are prescribed for people who are allergic to penicillin.

Follow your health care provider's instructions for antibiotic use. Take all of the medication, even if you feel better. You should feel better within a day or two. A person with strep throat should stay home until 24 hours after starting the antibiotic.

What If My Strep Throat Isn't Getting Better?

If your strep throat is not getting better, let your health care provider know right away. Do not stop taking your prescribed medicine unless your health care provider tells you to. Call your health care provider if these symptoms occur:

Fever one or two days after feeling better
Nausea or vomiting
Earache
Headache
Skin rash
Cough
Swollen glands
Painful joints
Shortness of breath
Dark urine, rash, or chest pain (may occur three to four weeks later)

How Is Tonsillitis Different From a Sore Throat With a Cold?

Sometimes a sore throat is caused by tonsillitis, an inflammation of the tonsils. Tonsillitis can be caused by viruses or bacteria. While the tonsils' job is to help fight infection, the tonsils can also become infected. When they do, the result is tonsillitis and a very painful sore throat.

How Are Tonsillitis Symptoms Different From Symptoms of a Sore Throat With a Cold?

In addition to a sore throat, a cold usually causes nasal symptoms, such as runny nose or congestion. With tonsillitis, your tonsils become swollen and may have telltale white or yellow spots. Other symptoms with tonsillitis include the following:

Bad breath
Fever
Voice changes because of swelling
Painful swallowing
Swollen lymph glands in neck

How Is a Sore Throat From Tonsillitis Treated?

If the tonsillitis infection is bacterial like strep throat, then antibiotics are given. If the tonsillitis infection is viral, antibiotics will not help. The virus must run its course for the sore throat to resolve. For either type of throat infection, the following treatment measures may help:

Getting plenty of rest
Drinking lots of fluid
Eating smooth, soothing foods like gelatin, ice cream, shakes, frozen desserts, and soup
Avoiding crunchy or spicy foods
Using a vaporizer
Taking over-the-counter pain relievers such as acetaminophen, naproxen, or ibuprofen. Children should not take aspirin.
If the tonsillitis infections occur repeatedly, or if the tonsils are interfering with sleep and breathing, the doctor may recommend a tonsillectomy, which is the surgical removal of the tonsils.

Happy Mother's Day- Poem

Happy Mother's Day to all the mom's, grandmother's, and mother figures in someone's life.

Before I Was a Mom ...
Author: Unknown
Before I was a Mom...

I made and ate hot meals. I had unstained clothing. I had quiet conversations on the phone.

Before I was a Mom... I slept as late as I wanted and never worried about how late I got into bed. I brushed my hair and my teeth everyday.

Before I was a Mom... I cleaned my house each day. I never tripped over toys or forgot words to lullabies.

Before I was a Mom... I didn't worry whether or not my plants were poisonous. I never thought about Immunizations.

Before I was a Mom... I had never been puked on, pooped on, spit on, chewed on, peed on or pinched by tiny fingers. I had complete control of my mind, my thoughts, and my body. I slept all night.

Before I was a Mom... I never held down a screaming child so that doctors could do tests or give shots. I never looked into teary eyes and cried. I never got gloriously happy over a simple grin. I never sat up late hours at night watching a baby sleep.

Before I was a Mom... I never held a sleeping baby just because I didn't want to put it down. I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I couldn't stop the hurt. I never knew that something so small could affect my life so much. I never knew that I could love someone so much. I never knew I would love being a Mom.

Before I was a Mom... I didn't know the feeling of having my heart outside my body. I didn't know how special it could feel to feed a hungry baby. I didn't know that bond between a mother and her child. I didn't know that something so small could make me feel so important.

Before I was a Mom... I had never gotten up in the middle of the night every 10 minutes to make sure all was okay. I had never known the warmth, the joy, the love, the heartache, the wonderment, or the satisfaction of being a Mom. I didn't know I was capable of feeling so much before I was a Mom

Simple Easter Mantel

Easter is quickly approaching, less than two weeks away.  We've started getting ready in my household with a little bit of decor and the Easter bunny has ordered a few items for Easter baskets.  One of my favorite things about the holidays is decorating my mantel.  I am not spectacular in home design, so simple is best for me!  I hope you enjoy my simple Easter/Spring Mantel!

Spring Forward

Just a reminder to everyone to "Spring Forward" today, officially at 2 am. One of my favorite things about setting our clocks forward an hour is that it's usually not dark when people get home from work. I'm not currently a 9-5'er, I'm a stay-at home mom who does some contract work for an adoption agency, but I still appreciate that it won't be dark when my husband gets home from work :). Plus, it just means that we're getting that much closer to Spring! It's going to be in the 70s this week- what!?! :)

Project 365

I've decided that I want to attempt Project 365. Project 365 in it's simplest form is the attempt to take one picture every day for a year. Many people use expensive cameras and try to improve their photography skills, while others just take photos with their iPhone. I will be doing the latter. Since I always have my iPhone close by, this will increase the likelyhood that I'll actually get that one picture a day. I also just downloaded an free app appropriately titled Project 365. This app will send me reminders each day to take a picture and has a calendar set up to add a picture to each day in the calendar.

As a mom, this idea is really intriguing to me because it's true- time flies when you're having fun! I can't believe how quickly my boys are growing up, already 6 and 3, no longer babies! I do not have the greatest memory, so these pictures will help me to remember some of the little everyday things that mean so much!

Most people start this project at the beginning of the year or maybe even the beginning of the school year. Me? I'm starting it at absolutely no special date in my life of March 8!

Feel free to come join me on this fun project!

Delaware Family Expo- Today!

Did you know that there is a Delaware Family Expo going on today at the Chase Center on the Riverfront?  I just read about it while skimming through the online version of Delaware's Out and About Magazine.

The Family Expo will be today from 10am- 4 pm or 5 pm, depending on the website that you go to, but I think it's 4 pm.   It is free admission and promises to connect you with local companies that will strengthen, entertain, and encourage your children and family as well as having costumed characters, indoor golf, an inflatable slide and many more special surprises.

Some local companies that will be there include the Brandywine Zoo, Delaware Nature Society, The Little Gym of Wilmington and the Wilmington Blue Rocks.

You just might see me there looking for fun summer camps for my boys!

I'm lazy sometimes!

I'll admit it, some days I am just lazy! Today is one of those days. Today is one of the first days in a bit that I haven't had much going on. Yesterday I volunteered at my 6 year old's kindergarten class, took my 3 year old to speech class, made dinner, did some paperwork, had a meeting in the evening, etc. and today I don't have any of that stuff that needs to be done but I just have not been motivated to get stuff done today. Believe me, there is a lot that could be done around the house. I haven't yet decided what's for dinner and it's 3 o'clock. Plus, it's beautiful out so I should be much more energized. I'm even too lazy to put a picture on this post!

Free Pizza, um yes please!

Many of you may already know about this, but I wanted to throw this out there for those who don't.  Papa John's has Papa Rewards. From my experience you either love Papa John's or you're not a fan, in our household we are big fans (it's the Garlic Sauce that does it).  How Papa Rewards works is you sign up for an online account at PapaJohns.com or Papa Rewards and then you sign up for their rewards account.  You earn 1 point for every $5 you spend online at www.papajohns.com, including tax and delivery.  When you earn a total of 25 points (which admittedly can take a bit) you are able to redeem your rewards for a free large up to three topping pizza.  So far since doing this rewards program I've earned one free pizza and won another free pizza through a promotion they were doing.  So you probably won't be getting a free pizza every week, but in my opinion, every little bit counts!
